kiln vent - wobbly - advice please

Hi all....
I have just installed a vent under my electric kiln. The kiln is 29 inches
wide - the vent they sent is 18 x 18. The kiln wiggles. The height is about
37 inches high - I think the height makes the kiln wiggle. Is it safe? Should
they have sent the larger vent which is 24" with the kiln? I understand they
don't want to admit a mistake but it'll be too late if it is the wrong size.

I have looked throught the archives endlessly. I have called/emailed the
ceramic company, the kiln company, the vent company. I'm not getting a clear
answer.

Please, someone, answer me....

Mary Lou,
Please go to www.ortonceramic.com/Firing/selectguide.html and you will see
that the 18 inch stand vent is appropriate for kilns with an inside diameter
up to 24 inches. If you still are not satisfied with your vent, return it
and we will gladly exchange it for the 24 inch stand vent. Please call me
at (800)241-4400 if I can be of any assistance to you.

hi ml,
i just ordered a vent for my kiln that is also 29 in. wide. i got the 24 in.
size on the recommendation of the company. the person i talked with explained
that it is important that the sides of the kiln are supported by the stand.
if the stand is too small the bottom of the kiln, the stuff made out of fiber
brick will be the only thing supporting the weight of the kiln and that it is
not strong enough and could result in damage to your kiln floor.

i suppose you could try and make some kind of extra support but i know that
those vents are not cheap and if you don't feel good about the one you have, i
would be assertive and ask for the larger one. i would hope that the company
you are using would have the good sense to honor your request and treat you
with the respect to deserve.

good luck!

Paragon recommends a 24" stand for 10- & 12-sided kilns. In my opinion,
the 18" stand is too small for a 10-sided kiln.

What is the brand name and model number on the vent you purchased? What
brand and model electric kiln are you installing this fan on? Sounds like
the company that sold you this vent should be helping you out! Give me a
call and we'll figure this one out.
