even rims/pin tool/loose pots

Many of us on Clayart are working on using the
pin tool on rims less often ...... not as a
lone objective=20
..... but reflective of our attempts to throw
more loosely.... after having successfully
thrown with care and precision for, in some cases,
many years. This is one method with which
I'm struggling every time I get to the studio.
Some days it simply happens; other days my
bowls loosely flop all over the wheel - not a
pretty sight - nor an interesting one. =20

Loose throwing for those with little exposure
to the concept (right out of college with BA
in hand, for example)
is difficult to visualize. If that's true for you,
look at Nils Lou's newer work. His work was
never Tight that I could see; in fact, it was
among the pottery that most bedazzled me ....
but the new
stuff is definitely outside the box (to coin a
cliche ... I know I know hush now). Look at
Marta's work, Bacia's...... so many
others....... Dannon's ...... rims are strong,
workable, yes, but obviously the main=20
objective for the artists is NOT such&such
rims as proscribed by some artist/teacher
from their past.

In the Mojave apparently thinkin' that with Mel
away I
..... as part of the moderating team .... must
Know It All and thus proceed to share my Good
Fortune and Splendiferous Knowledge
at every opportunity. Think I'll shut
up now..... or the Fates will get me..... had
about enough of that lately.........

Hi Joyce,

For me, the occasion of uneven rims or uneven thicknesses of
them, seemed to express my less than thorough Wedging
practices...

For 'loose' throwing, I was happiest with thorough wedging,
and for my pulls to effect the looseness I was after...

Anyway...those thoughts came to mind in glanceing to some of
these threads on the rims and Needle Tools and so on...
