The Ceramics Marketing Poll is now closed. Thanks to
everyone who contributed their ideas, voted in the poll,
and helped to promote the poll! The complete results are
available online at
http://www.artchain.com/polls/gotclayresults.html

The poll identified several strong themes that attract
people to pottery. The strongest is the intrinsic beauty
or artistic merit of the work. Close behind that is the
handmade nature (and uniqueness) of the work. The
functional nature of pottery is also a strong part of its
attraction. Each of these "themes" can be used as
specific marketing messages.

The strong favorite as a common slogan is "Ceramics -
Art You Can Touch." This slogan highlights the "art"
value of ceramics=8A the beauty and artistic merit that
purchasers appreciate. But the reference to touching
also brings to mind the handmade nature and functional
value of pottery. Overall, a good choice as a unifying
slogan!

There were MANY good ideas for conveying our
message and promoting ceramics. One popular idea
which we could launch with minimum effort is press
releases to local and national publications. (My own
company has a mailing list of about 350 arts
publications in the US, and my wife's ad agency has the
ability to submit press releases to thousands of
publications online.)

All of this is a good start=8A but there's a lot of work to
be done in order to launch even a grass roots
promotional campaign. We will need to draft press
releases, get various ceramics guilds and organizations
to lend their support, design promotional materials,
make press contacts, put together a schedule, etc.

If you would like to help with any of these activities,
please contact me off list. I think a small group of 5 or
six individuals can make rapid progress, and "report
back" to the larger group.

I don't follow how this turned into a discussion of pizza but hey, that's=20
okay! I absolutely agree with the conclusions you reached. I have long=20
been convinced that people spend all this energy and money to get handmade=
=20
stuff into their homes made by artists they have met because that gives the=
=20
stuff meaning to them. They can get beautiful stuff every where they look=
=20
but stuff made by somebody they met and talked to, that seems to attract on=
=20
a very different level.
