I have a Cone 4 M-I clear recipie that gets very cloudy. Does anyone have a
Cone 4 that works well?

Eric B on wed 13 aug 03

it's possible that you're applying it too thick and/or underfiring it a tad.

Darnie Sizemore on thu 14 aug 03

Actually this a common glaze and has had this problem as long as I have
known it. If applied correctly it is a nice glaze. I am using it in a
classroom setting with elementary children, so I need a full proof clear
glaze. And I don't want to spend $30 a gallon on an Amaco clear glaze.

There is not an easy way.
So what to do with the five gallons milky glaze?
5: 2+ 2.5 which in weight? Do you know?
One K'G glaze with water I consider as 500 grams.
To the approximate weight add 10% zircon silicate mix well and you have
a majolica glaze.
If it is a runny glaze apply over the oxides like candle drips if not
you can paint over rather than bellow.

i doubt it.

but theres a bunch of text book ways to fix cloudy clears.
If you dont have any of those text books, try the archives.
I hate waiting for the clayart server, so do the index card e-mail thing.
ya know e-mail the listserv topics and it gives you associations to skim.

My hunch is that it has calcium as whiting and or in the flux and too much
of it.
Try swapping out whiting for wollastonite. switching to a higher melting
frit.
adding a wee bit of clay.
i bet you can do 2 dozen line blends faster than mixing a 100 gram batch of
each suggestion recipe and when your done. You'll have figured out how it
works.
:)

Scott,

Thanks for the suggestion. Now all I have to do is figure out how to do just that.

:)
