Although this is the first time I've contacted this site, I've been an
enthusiastic "voyeur" for years and have learned so much about and from the
wonderful people who populate ClayArt. Now, I would like to ask for some
help from those of you who do your own photography (digital or slides).
Someone mentioned that they made their own barndoors for their lights. It
would be great if this were possible as I have decided that after a hundred
years in clay I need to take some decent pictures of my work. After
checking the price of these lights with barn doors on the web, the prospect
of doing it myself sounds really good. I've got a new Olympus digital and
an wonderful old Canon AE-1. Any advice you could give would be most
appreciated.

Hi Sylvia,

Barn doors aren't the first thing I would reach for to make quality
slides. There are lots of ways to do it and lots of views on how is
best. Like pottery there is no single best way. The way I do it is
described in a series of 3 articles I published in Clay Tines. Two of
those are now on my web site at:

http://www.frogpondpottery.com/articles/article.html

They deal with slides and electronic flash (in a homemade soft box).
The third is in the September/October 2001 issue and it deals with
floodlamps and digital. Look them over and see if they give you some
ideas on how to proceed. I focused on doing it on the cheap.

Regards,

John

Sounds like you need a bit more information than how to build barn
doors.

Read Steve Meltzer's "Photographing your Craft Work", you should be able
to get it through the book sellers on line or maybe you can order it
through the magazine "Craft Report". He writes a column for them on
photography. It appears that some of his columns are on line
(http://www.craftsreport.com/april03/cp.html). You can also order the
book from him directly and can probably get the address from "Crafts
Report". If you happen to be in or near Sarasota, you could even hire
him.

Also see John Hesselberth's 2 articles from "Clay Times". They are
available for download from his site (http://www.frogpondpottery.com).

Then, of course, this subject has come up many times and you can find
LOTS in the archives.

Or just sit back and listen to the replies.

That should be enough to get you started.

Russel

Thanks so much for the advice on the Barn Door lights, as well as other
terrific suggestions. Russel, LaurieJean, John - I'll track down your
suggestions, books, articles and web sites. I'm sure these will give me a
great start on getting better looking and, hopefully, professional looking
slides. You have all been wonderful about making a Clayart newbie feel
welcome and everyone who responded, both on and off line, is most
appreciated.
