HELP--from anyone who fires with gas:

I need some advice. I'm about at the end of my rope with my
gas kiln. I have a Geil fiber kiln. The problem is that
for every good firing I have, I have at least one, sometimes
2 where the baso shuts the gas off. One time a coupling
came loose. I can understand that. This morning I was 3
hours into the firing when I came out and found the baso had
shut off the gas. I cannot see where any couplings may have
come loose. Any ideas about where to troubleshoot this?
Anything I should be watching out for? Will opening the air
shutters on the burners to 1/2 inch cause the gas to go out?
How about opening the damper? This is my 8th firing of the
kiln and the baso is new. The kiln was used, but I had it
completely checked out by the gas company before
installation. I'm firing propane at 11 pound pressure--the
recommended pressure by Geil. The manual that came with the
kiln does not go into too many specifics concerning the
how-to of firing. The kiln is under an open shed. The day
is not windy, but sunny and calm. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Subject: gas problems

Morning Debra - could the problem be the result of your thermocouples for
your pilot lights not being in their flame path ? Even though the day is
calm the draft/turbluence could be affecting the pilot flame. How old are
the thermocouples? Could be the basso valves are doing what they are
supposed to do - shut off the gas when the pilots go out ??? You did not
mention if the pilots were still on and that only the gas to the burners
shut down.
Cannot think of anything more frustrating to have re-occuring. Hope
someone helps solve this problem. MarjB

Debra

You mentioned that the Baso value was new. It could be the pressure rating for the valve. My current kiln has valves rated for 5 lbs (according to the vendor Alpine) of pressure and they will close if I go above that. You could try lowering your pressure. I don't know about Geil's recommendation. But most people I know fire successfully at a lower pressure.

I want to thank everyone who replied to my problem with the
baso shutting the kiln off. I bought a new thermocouple
today and will install it tonight. I will try firing the
kiln on Saturday. I really appreciate all the good advice.
The thermocouple is a good place to start.
