centering big pieces of clay.

My third carpal tunnel surgery was not a success. I hope the ongoing pain
etc will lessen when interior swelling subsides, which I am told can take
months. Ya. Sure...

Which brings me to stress and strain on the wrists. I know that in my youth
I was very competitive and wanted to wedge the biggest lumps of clay, and
center the biggest, blah, blah, blah. I stressed and strained my wrists and
now (roll of bass drums, sound of the Shofar) am Paying the Price.

Women, regardless of hand size (I have quite large paws) have smaller
carpal tunnels than men. Some people have a predisposition to carpal tunnel
syndrome. Some to arthritis. Some to the ruination of the carpal metacarpal
joint.

I know all those wonderful people who stand on scaffolds to finish throwing
8 foot tall bottles. May you be among them--but not at the cost of your
hands.

Now then. Center smaller lumps. After you have centered one into a shallow
cone, dry it by scraping off the mud with a metal rib. Wham another ball of
clay on top. Repeat. Try opening with your clenched fist, pushing straight
down. If your arms hurt after you do this, try icepacks immediately. If
they keep on hurting QUIT DOING IT.
