slides: the digital divide

<<<<Divide'; My photofinisher develops each roll, calls me when the uncut roll is
ready to look at (4 hours or so), and I come in to look at the filmstrip. If
the quality is good, he then makes a CD for $11 which has each image in 5
resolutions up to 700Kb. Or if I want more, $17 fro a hi-rez CD which adds a set
at 1.5Mb per image. The key is not having the roll mounted until the CD has
been made. Way cheaper that way.

Hank: you are lucky!!!...not all photolabs will give you that type of
personal attention. The best lab where I live works with mostly large professional
accounts. They are not willing to handle small accounts that way. Makes me think
that I need to try some other labs to see if I can get this done.

<<<macro lens, on a tripod with a cable release and using Fuji RTP-11 slide
film, and a color corrected tungsten bulb. Great resolution (the photofinisher
says that each 35mm slide can have the equivalent of 18Mb of information!), but
how to send over the web?

I would assume that you could scan it or use software to create lower level
resolution for that specific purpose, but maybe that is not possible. Maybe you
could respond off the list, cause it may not be interesting to anyone else,
but I am curious why you are using a "macro" lens.

Thanks,

Dear Bob;

I use the 100mm macro lens for shooting pots because it has a focal
length (medium long) that precludes the foreshortening of the pots
(notice how wide angle lenses make noses seem too big?). I also love
the 22 F-stop, which gives great depth of field. I use the macro
feature whenever i want to record details. BTW, the Cds my
photofinisher makes from my slide rolls has 5 or 6 different
resolutions for each image, from 9 Kb to 1.5 Mb, so it is easy to post
pics to the web or to any email addy in whatever rez the occasion
suggests.

Cheers, Hank in Eugene

Probably Kodak Photo CD. The format includes 6 resolutions; 64 x 96, 128
x 192, 256 x 384, 512 x 786, 1024 x 1536, 2048 x 3072 pixels.

This is what I'm getting. There is also Kodak Pro Photo CD which adds
another resolution at the top end.

I' you're preparing images for the web it's great to start with a higher
resolution one and work down to what you finally need.
