All this talk about slides reminded me that I haven't gotten mine back from
the 'Alternative Firing Methods' entry from last May.

Has anyone heard anything from that?

Susan, it takes a long time to put a book together. And at the end of the
process, there is a lot of urgent work that needs to be done to meet
deadlines. And they need the slides "just in case" until after the final
corrected proofs have gone to the printer. So the author usually returns
the slides at leisure after everything else is done.
Some publishers are better about keeping you informed about the progress of
a book than others, but you often don't know which of (or even if) your
images have been used until the book hits the shelves. I once saw a book
with some of my images on the shelf at my local clay supplier before I'd
gotten my slides back or been notified in any way that they were going to
use them.
If you sent slides in this May, I'd be surprised if you got them back before
Christmas. I was invited to send slides for Richard Zakin's update of his
glaze book, and sent them last December. I have not heard a word from him,
and I don't expect to for a while yet. Many authors or publishers will
acknowledge that they received your materials, but many don't even do that.

So be patient, and good luck getting your images used. Your mother will be
so proud of you if they get in!

Hi, this lurker's weighing in with some information on your slides for
Alternative Firing Methods & Kilns by Jas. Watkins and Paul
Wandless. The selections have been made and the notification letters
are going out as we speak. Your slides, if selected, will be returned
near the end of the year--once the printer's done with them. Declined
slides will arrive with the letter.
The original deadline had been moved to mid-May; sorry for the delay.
There were hundreds of fabulous entries--thanks to all!
