cryolite chemistry and loi

I am trying to figure out what Cryolite really does in
the kiln. Does anyone know? I am documenting it at

http://digitalfire.ab.ca/cermat/ceramicmaterials/material.php?goto=cryolite

Since it contains fluorine that partially or completely
gases the remaining sodium and aluminum try to take up
oxygen from the atmosphere or other materials. Thus the
LOI is not theoretical. I am going to put some cryloite
in the kiln on Wednesday and see what happens.

Hello Tony
You can see in my site I use it either to create mottling effect or , mainly because it is
insoluble source of Na
As far as I know I am the only one in my peaceful state that uses cryolite.
Please see these pages

Description of the test tiles:
====================
1) I call it freckled Ababi
2) The blend between Lana Wilson textural and the Stony Fissured I think of Behrens
3)Behrens bright patterned 6
3) speckle blue white
In this glaze the Calcium Carbonate was replaced by Fluorspar. Bigger spots than in
the blue and white dots.
4)The last slide"Cement Portland Glaze
Experimental glaze with 22% cement"

One slide:Pinnell's Weathered Bronze
My blends to adjust it better to ^6.
The cryolite helps me a lot.
If you want the recipes I can E mail you off list.
If you want me to check anything in the kiln please let me know. The Cryolite I use is

Dear Tony Hansen,

I think questions have been asked before about Cryolite.

Information to hand suggests that it fuses to a liquid at a temperature =
below 800 deg C without decomposing. It is used in the Aluminium =
industry as a flux for Bauxite.

Perhaps this is not a case of simple LOI. There may be chemical =
reactions with Silica or other ingredients in a Glaze Batch which we are =
not aware of. I would have a look into the deeper chemistry of Aluminium =
and Sodium and the production of Aluminium Metal.

Best regards,

I would be interested to know how much weight
the material loses on firing. You would have
to make a thin tile of clay and high fire it
and then weight it, spread a thin layer of
20 grams or so of cryolite powder on it,
weigh again, then bisque and weigh, then
glaze fire and weigh. I would be interested
in the appearance of the two fired materials
also.

I think I will do that and also make a 50:50
mix with kaolin and do it again to see if it
takes on more oxygen when mixed with a material
that will have some to spare.

Ok I will use unglazed plates I have fired already to ^6. (Under crystal
wares). I shall bisque to 1000C. If I have a 06 cone or others in that
rang I shall add them too. In the second fire to 1220 C I shall add
cones too: I keep ^6 and ^7 I will scan them and upload the JPG to my
site. This firing will be with a sculptor so I believe at 1220 it will
be more like ^7. I do not have many firings in the summer. If it will
not work I shall repeat it but it will take sometime to be done.

I

When I will be done I shall write you again.
