I am no longer in Detroit (unfortunately), but I am from that area, and =
can
highly recommend that you visit Pewabic Pottery on Jefferson Ave., as =
well
as the Detroit Institute of Arts on Woodward Ave. Right behind the DIA =
is
Center for Creative Studies, a private college with a fairly fine =
ceramics
department. Just remember, if you are driving around Detroit itself, =
that
there are a LOT of one way streets. Of course, they will all seem to be
going in the opposite direction in which you wish to go. This is why - =
there
are streets that are North-South & East-West oriented, there are streets
that are parallel and perpendicular to Detroit River (which is kind of =
on a
SW to NE angle), and overlaid on that, is the spoke pattern that the =
French
laid down when they had the city many moons ago. It sounds complex, but =
if
you are armed with that info, you can recognize the patterns on a map. =
Visit
Greektown. There is a good-sized restaurant on the main corner there =
(sorry,
I don't recall the name) that serves huge spanakopita (spinach pie) - it =
is
about 6 inches square, and 4-5 inches tall. Get the saganaki (flaming
cheese), and yell "Opa!" when they light it on fire at your table. Every
weekend throughout the summer, there is an ethnic festival of one kind =
or
another downtown, too. See if you can find Eastern Market. It is a =
massive
farmer's market, and lots of fun. If you go to Dearborn, I have a whole
round of suggestions for there, too, as that is where I am originally =
from.
Pick me up in Indianapolis on your way, and you can have a native guide!

Have fun!
