Tony Clennell mentioned my name so I just have to jump in here about the safety issue. My husband Wayne and I have run our store/repair shop for 30 years. We sell Stihl chain saws (starting at $169 to clear up a misconception) and chaps which start at around $60 (made of ballistic plastic, not chain mail nowadays!:) A small price to pay for quality and protection. But the safety issue is the most important. Please, always read the manual. Always, when buying a piece of power equipment have the dealer give you a demonstration in its safe usage. (They don't do that at the big box stores.) We never sell a saw or anything else in a box. We assemble it, service it, and demo with all the safety information. Newer model saws are much safer than the old ones. Companies like Stihl spend a lot of money making their products safer to use. But the ultimate responsibility lies with the consumer. Saw safely, Claybuds. Our buddy Tony, with all his gear on, is the poster boy for chain saw safety. Toni Smith in Ohio

my safe system for chain saws is as follows:

neighbor comes over, `mel, can i borrow your chain saw?`

`well hank, the chain saw weighs 252 pounds`.
`mel, what kind of chain saw is that?`

`well the actual saw weighs 12 pounds, but i come with it, and
that adds 230 lbs.` very few people on earth can
ever borrow my fine tools.
but, if they need help, i can fix it, or work with them.

i keep all my safety glasses in a paper sack. they never
get dirty or full of dust. but, there is an old pair on the shelf
of the grinder.
and, those full face shields are wonderful for doing bigger
raku pieces. deflects fumes, and keeps your face cool.
