Dear Friends,
I think some of us may be missing the point on this one. If Anhydrous =
Sodium Carbonate is being used it must be mixed in with your dry =
ingredients very thoroughly and evenly to get a uniform mixture.
If Anhydrous Sodium Carbonate is added to water a chemical reaction =
starts which results in the crystallisation of Sodium Carbonate Deca =
Hydrate. This means that ten molecules of water join with one molecule =
of anhydrous Sodium Carbonate. Hence the big lump in the bucket. You may =
be able to get the salt to go back into solution if you raise the =
temperature. The deca hydrate should dehydrate above 34 deg Celsius.

I think the phrase about teaching glaze chemestry is what you do on
this list all the time.
I have learned much from your posts.

I've made the mistake of adding soda after a glaze has been mixed up and wetted
(wanted to see how soda ash would change a test.) What you can do with the
crystals is sieve them out and put them in a pan with some water from the top of
the settled glaze and then heat on the stove. You can then add the
"de-crystaled" soda ash water back into the glaze bucket.
