loppy pots/japan(story)

there are many old sayings about loppy pots in japan.

this is about teabowls...and they
can be as loppy as they get.

who gets to make loppy pots?

the best trained, the most revered, the best
skilled of all the potters.
they get really loppy.

and, why is that a fact?

because, only a skilled potter would
make and sell loppy stuff. everyone knows
they have skill, they have perfection...and
they all know they can make pots anyway they
want...and no one can say a word. it is intended.
so when you see loppy pots, they were meant
to be that way. a fact.

if a student makes loppy pots, we do not know
if he intended it, or if he was just an unskilled loppy potter.

does the master care what you think? not
a bit.
does the master ever think about what
american's think? not a bit.
the work is what matters, and how it
is made, and what is the function, and
what is the philosophy of making those
pots? the master knows. that is the quest
of the master....not to please others, to please
the self.

a very good potter, with gobs of skill, made some
loppy cups. i think he knew why he made them.
and i think he smiled.

I remember reading once that it is fine to break the rules - but only
after you kow what they are and can practice them perfectly!
