God knows I'm no expert in clay things; But I want to raise some
questions about the recent discussions concerning paper clay for
functional items. Ron Roy if your out there [I love you and respect your
opinions]. Someone has said that you believe that paper clay is porous
and inappropriate for functional ware. People often misquote others; I
would like your experimental observations; obviously earthenware clay
that is glazed is functional in one sense. What about stoneware "paper
clay" fired to cone 6-9 and that is glaced; what if its paper stoneware
paper clay? What does porous mean? Light weight is one thing; porous is
another. I remember being told that hollow steel rods when grouped are
stronger than solid steel rods of the same diameter. Does a cone 6 or 9
body with or without paper clay components absorb more moisture? Have
tests been done? Are your alleged opinons valid - based on
experimentation? What are the results of testing? Sorry if I come across
as combative - I really don't meant too. I just really love the idea of
paper clay; it is certainly great for handbuilt non-functional items and
I believe for many school programs where handbuilding is the predominant
form of pottery. As an "silent parterner" in Axners and as you being a
"consultant" for Axner's this is a most interesting discussion; knowning
both you and Howard Axner, I know that neither of you or myself have any
hesitation voicing opinions that are public. Its one thing to say that
paper clay is more porous [in what sense] and another to advocate that
it shouldn't be use for funcional ware because it absorbs moisture. I
just would like to see the evidence.. God bless; Having a great time in

When Ron wrote to me about the subject I broke ( not from anger) the paperclay
mugs I made.
It was very hard to except it. Paperclay was my personal pottery revelation!
It was almost like writing a book giving it to the publisher and hearing was censored by
someone!
I asked some "glaze- clay gurus , sad to say they agreed with Ron. I asked what about
the fact that I live in a hot place, I cover the inside with a liner glaze while the outside
is partly unglazed, perhaps I have thought more drying out than absorption inside? No
Salvation!
I wrote again to Ron. I must admit Ron was very patient.

About the absorption!
I don't remember but was terrible. I think 5-15%. So what to do?
"My veterans" circle when I told them that "food bearing dishes" we would make out of
full clay said they would not make "food bearing dishes".

Please see the works, mine as well as my students: Not because I want you to
compliment me ( of course I want you to compliment me!) But because I want you to
see the variety of works,
By the way , for me the paperclay is not the cause ( though it makes some chaos),
but it is a tool. An example: My main crystal claybody behaves like an un plastic
porcelain: An add of 10% paper in volume helps to make pinched wares or vases.
Sometimes I cannot remember what is clay and what is paperclay!

Please note the paperclay sculpture of Chaim Maiers. Chaim was one of my painting
