cassius basaltic

Have any of you folks had any experience with a black clay called
cassius basaltic? I have been fooling around with it in my class and
I'm curious what other potter's experiences with it have been like. I
have read/heard that it's only a cone 4 clay but I have also read other
sources which list it as going from cone 4 to cone 6. It seem prone to
blistering or bloating if it fires too high. Sort of tempermental. Any
info or glazing do's and don'ts would be appreciated. I'm fascinated
with it's lovely color and it's great to throw with.

I have used it at 5/6 without problems. I love the look of it with just a
clear over it. Kind of mottled. I am disappointed when I cover it with
glaze because it seems like a waste of the clay (just covers it up).

I LOVE this clay. And I agree with Cindi - unglazed or clear, it is
very beautiful. It does contain manganese, so use it with proper care.

Katey, I've used it a lot. I wear gloves when I throw with it. Stain
horribly, plus I don't know what makes it black. The pre mixed glaze from
Laguna (Snowflake) looks great on it. Fire it to cone 4 only at 5 and 6 it
bloats and gets little white rough specks. At 4 it's a smooth, really dark,
dark brown. I don't think I would use it for functional work. IMHO
