buying equipment from ebay (caution)

eBay handles millions of transactions a year; it's obviously
very successful, and for good reason. I have bought and sold
a number of items on eBay, and never had any problems.

However, there are a large number of eBay scams and
rip-offs... probably far more than eBay likes to admit. Not
long ago I sold an expensive item to a very experience eBay
user. We began chatting, and he told many about some of the
ways people get ripped off. I would *absolutely* have
fallen for some of the scams he described. Scary!

So, before making a very expensive eBay purchase, I would
advise buying a book about eBay, just to learn more about the
process, what can go wrong, and what you can do if there are
problems. (There are several books listed on Amazon)
Also, do a web search for eBay scams.

As long as you are knowledgeable and careful, eBay is a great
way to get good deals.

Ebay used to have an escrow service for pricey items. The buyer would
deposit money in the escrow account. Ebay would confirm the money was
there, and hold it until the buyer received his/her item. After that,
they would immediately release the money to the seller. =20

Ebay is now the #1 seller of used cars in the country, so I am
assuming something like this still exists.

The artist who took me into hospital and bought me lunch today was telling
me about his experience looking for a high-end digital camera on Ebay UK...
The long and short of it was that a guy who has been severely scorched
(=A33000 or around US$5000) is putting in bogus bids on "obvious" scams
using a pseudonym such as "Scambuster". When my friend e-mailed out of
curiosity, he got a four-page e-mail with the low-down on the various
methods used from this public-spirited chap. Like everything else in this
world, they are apparently pretty obvious once you know how.

As they say in Germany: "Vorsicht ist Mutter der Porzellankiste"
(=3D "caution is the mother of the box of crockery")

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser - Disgusted to read that my doctors assume 17% of my brain is
fat!!? First question next visit: is this the norm or should I be trying
the shrink my head too?
