$3.00 Reward!!

For the return of stolen pottery pieces from the
Museum of Mediocre Art.....

Hi,

I've been thinking about jokes and originality.
There are basic templates for jokes that one
learns to recognize, then eventually to use to
create new ones. We learn first by "getting" jokes
but then must go on to recognizing the "templates"
at some level. Once one "gets the feeling" for a
particular "template" you can use it again and again
to amuse or bore your family & friends... depending
on how "successful" we are.

The more I think about it, the more I think I recognize
that art is also about recognizing certain "templates"
and that a fruitful discussion about "originality"
must probably lean on this understanding.

Without thinking about it much I assumed that to be
"original" would be understood to mean to "invent"
a new template ( I worked some 25 years in R&D,
this is how I thought). But leaning on the humor
anology I can see that a humorist can be "successful"
by any standard, make a real real contribution, make
a living, even get an evening show without inventing
a single new template.

"Original" in the the context of a humorist would
mean to me only that he/she uses a set of templates
in some "innovative/ different" and "successful"
way. So, no original template needed.

A very whipped dead horse now, but once again
I've really enjoyed this thread, and I think I learned
somthin.

Hi George,

You 'template' idea is very interesting...and in many
ways...

Even tho' I cannot seem to tell for my own purposes, what is
'template' and what is content of template, or sub-template
or harmonic of template...or what is
interference pattern or compliment or polarizeing effects of
layered or overlapping templates...or what is paradigm as
may guide template aquisition, assimilation, synergy or...

But, or and, it IS interesting...thrilling to me...

It seems to me...that it takes a 'pattern' to see a
pattern...and I do not seem to get much farther than that in
any fundimental way. Just that there is something as may be
so described as is going on...that is 'like that'...

It is very interesting!

It invites many questions...
