Hallo,
A few days ago someone suggested a couple of sites on the net that were, =
apparently full of good marketing/ promotional ideas for artists, that =
could be put t good use by potters.=20
I saw that thay were U.S. sites and thought that although some of the =
stuff wouldnt apply here in England, I would have a look anyway because =
I might be able to adapt ideas and one can always =
learn............Anyway, I went to the 2nd of the sites recommended and =
went to the marketing ideas page:=20
Only to be greeted by a banner clearly stating that "Art is what you =
can get away with"=20
Its not often that I am rendered speechless, or inclined to do a Victor =
Meldrew impersonation,
but really...............
Did anyone else have a look?
What did you think?
Is it just me?
Pat.

Hi,
I realise markets are very different, dependant on location and time. Also
that we all need to make a living. I didnt mean to sound snotty, I dont
think we have a market here like that, at present. I was just a bit
surprised at the baldness of the statement, in that context, thats all. What
does the guy who
runs the site get out of it? B.T.W? All the specific marketing advice that
I have read from this
country seems to come from a different angle. Possibly because it is written
by artists who have managed to make a business against all the odds. I went
with an open mind, ready to learn. I think the type of advice given on that
site might have been well recieved here about 30 years ago when the attitude
towards "crafts" was different to what it is today. But then I am not sure
what the attitude towards "crafts" is today anyway. Each to his/her own.
When I wrote down the quote I had it as being down from one Marshall McLuhan
(another m&m !) rather than Andy Wahol, but I may have misread it.
Pat.

Oops!!

I guess I should have added a warning to the recommendations of the business oriented
craft sites.

They don't spend a lot of time worrying about the spiritual side of art.

They are more concerned with supporting their families, being paid for their work, fighting
against cheap, falsely labeled imports, mounting good advertising campaigns, building a
successful business. They are fiercely surviving the present economy.

They share their good ideas freely .... and they have TONS of great ideas that have
worked for them. The J. Iverson site has more good, free information than you will find
most anywhere else.

These sites are frequented by practical people. Enjoy them for what they are, then come
to clayart to wax philosophical.

Chris Campbell - in North Carolina -I saw a Picasso at MOMA ... a wooden crate with
three nails banged into it to suggest eyes and a mouth .... even he must have blushed
when it sold ... art is sometimes whatever you can get away with.

Well.....I think your imput was well needed...as far as spirituality goes......People either have it, want it, or don't care either way. I think no matter what you decide to do with your art, you can bring your spirituality to it. I am a very spiritual person and I also want to sell my art full time.....I don't think that selling my work makes me less spiritual or make my art less "Art" Thank you for your information, it's well needed.

Hi....I have not gone and checked out the sites, yet. I was the one who asked for info. , mentoring, discussions, anything to help me better market my work. I will check out the sites soon....but with lower expectations (which I think might be a good thing) I am disappointed a what little feed back and/or support is out there to help people market their art. Is it some how supposed to be more nobel for me to be an artist that does my art on side while trying to work a full time job? I don't believe it is and I am going to do everything I can to educate people that you can make a honest living as a full time artist.
Thank You
