recipes on a translucent porcelain castable slip

Narcissus Egotism on mon 28 apr 03

I am a ceramics student. I've recently tried a recipe of translucent castable provided by my instructor. The recipe he gave me seems to be very unstable. Some times it seems to be too thick, we tried juggling the amount of water and sodium silicate. But the final result seems to be very brittle and easy tp crack. I am hoping you can help me out what kind of mistake there is on my recipe, or maybe provide an alternative recipe. Or if possible, maybe recommend a temperature for standard bisque and final firing. i've heard of people talking about high bisque and low firing. but no one in school seem to know how to help me. So here it is my recipe:

Translucent Castable (supposingly fired Cone 10)

Bone Ash--178.5

Grolleg--146.5

Silica--105

G2000 Feldspar--70

Soda Ash--1.5

Sodium Silicate (add after)

I'll really appreciate your help!!
