number of crystals... stress reduction and stuff

Hi, Ellie,

Ooo, that's an awful lot of work, but yes, it will work as
you describe. Little tiny lumps of zinc oxide will seed
a crystal by themselves (the same way that deliberately
seeding with zincite will).

What I do with my glazes is put all the dry ingredients in
a ziploc bag, seal the bag and mash the whole thing in my
hands for a while, trying to squash all the lumps. This is
really great for stress reduction! After a while, when
I think everything is mixed, add water, preferably warm,
and do it again. This part is not only great for stress reduction
but it makes your hands feel good. Then when I'm really
really sure you've got all the lumps out, I put the whole
thing from the bag through a 200 mesh Talisman sieve into
a jar. (Another hint: a Scum Buster is great for little
Talisman sieves! The round scrubber brush just fits into
the sieve and does a really great job!)

As to why firing to O16? Idonno, that's where I grew up
bisquing to. And it gives a surface that isn't too
hard to sand easily. As for allowing more of the glaze to
penetrate ... hmmm... Idonno.

Feedback. I've been trying to have a "Crystalliere of the
Month" on the crystalline-ceramics.info site but nobody
wants to go first. Interested?

Just time for another cup of tea.

Hang in there,

Fa

Hi Fa,
Do you really think I need a 200 mesh sieve? If so I guess I will go pick
one up. It seems to take forever to sift through my 80 but if I only have
to do it once instead of three times my arms will be very grateful.
My local ceramic supplier suggested I try bisque firing to 08. She said
that it would make the pot more receptive to the glaze. I tried this my
last firing but I also increased the no. of times I screened from 2 to 3.
It made a huge difference in how the glaze stayed mixed up.
I would definitely be interested in being first. What do you need me to do?
This sounds great. I just downloaded 45 pictures of my pots to my computer
so maybe I could send you a picture. Let me know what you want.
Thanks
Ellie :)
