carbon trap/downdraft

why would it matter what kind of kiln you use?
what kind of gas?

it does not matter if it is side draft, under your legs draft,
up or down draft. wood, propane, natural gas, coal.
reduction, carbon is the same.
we get shino in the gas/electric kiln just fine. carbon
traps like mad.

shino will carbon trap if you use soda ash, and esp
if you brush it on the top. i cannot speak for the aesthetic,
but i get jet black pots...wrote an article for cm all about it.
i did that, just to do it. hundreds of them. used about 10 different
recipes. they all carbon trap when soda ash is allowed to the surface.

reduce early, 012 or so.

if you down fire at 1900F for several hours it even
gets better.

the story is:
for good shino, throw a dead cat in the kiln...not
an old chinese potter. plus, it is so hard to stuff
an old chinese potter into the kiln...he fights back.

Mel,

I'm not going there with that...I still have nightmares of you and Nils
doing the two-step.
