I got an email from Bill Campbell today. Since I'm not sure whether or not
it is good email ediquette to copy and paste I'll paraphrase Bill
-not a studio potter- I'm a Art potter
-my work hasn't been handmade for 15 years
-bored with throwing
-came right outta the box knowing how to throw- it is easy!!!!!
-2 presses and 28 employees so if you're going to refer to me get it right!
-you compete for the same dollars I do
-handmade can only sell if it is better than what it competes with
I'm not going away, neither is China, Portugal or England.

Bill:
Where do I start??? On every count I'm at odds.
Any community would be proud of a company that sends 28 men/women home with
a paycheque. the flip side of that is that possibly 28 studio potters
haven't hung their shingle..
I still see potters throw clay and I think it is such magic. How could it
be boring????
How could you be good outta the box, when there are so many forms that
require decades of practice.
You and I work in clay. That is about as much as we have in common.
Press on!
cheers,
tony

I know this subject "pressing" is a sore spot with a lot of people on the
list. However, Bill Campbell isn't stealing anyone's ideas, designs or
glazes. His work is all over the US (anyhow everywhere that I have been )
and
obviously is popular with the general public. His work is well designed,
well glazed (in blue) and lets face, it people like it. I didn't think the
prices were so cheap. Just because someone makes something by hand does not
make it more appropriate or more valuable for that matter.

Like so many of you, he is generous with information if you approach him. I
think many people object to the fact that his pressed work sits next to
their hand made work in direct competition. I don't want to open the hand
made versus machine
made can of worms, however, I think your displeasure is somehow misplaced.
Shouldn't you have a gripe with the galleries, show promoters and shops
that either don't know the difference between "pressed" and "hand made" or
most likely turn their head the other way. Why blame Bill? My guess is he is
trying to make a honest living like the rest of us in the best way that he
knows how. So, complain to the galleries and shops.

I must say I am surprised to hear that Bill has a large shard pile. Somehow
I
figured he had it all nailed down....few losses. So there is hope for my
rutile blue problems:). I have never met Bill and I don't want to "press".
However, I suspect I could learn a lot from him if I did go and visit.
Did this post get some of your blood flowing and off the current events?
Good!!!

As for safety. I am still showing my shop address and phone number. So
beware, If you do come in...you will be held hostage if you don't buy
something "hand made".

Sincerely,
