one hundred bowls of compassion: a request for bowls

updated sun 23 mar 03

Compassion is like the moon shining on one hundred bowls of water, so that
there are one hundred moons, one in each bowl. This is not the moon's
design nor was it designed by anyone else. But for some strange reason there
seems to be one hundred moons in one hundred bowls of water.

~Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Tibetan Meditation Teacher

Dear Friends,

Miriam's Kitchen, a breakfast, case management, and transitional housing
program for homeless folks in Washington DC is holding the second annual 100
Bowls of Compassion fundraiser, and once again, I'm coming to Clayart to ask
for bowls. This gala event, held in the atrium of The World Bank, was a
great success last year, thanks to so many of you who contributed your work.
We had bowls donated from Okinawa to Nova Scotia, from California to
Vermont, which were auctioned off in silent and live auctions.

The event, produced in collaboration with the Shambhala Center of
Washington, DC, featured beautiful ikebana flower arrangements and live
traditional Japanese music from the Toho Koto Society. The music, the
flowers and the 13-foot glass atrium all provided an elegant showcase for
the many exquisite bowls on display.

Due to the success of last year’s event, which raised nearly $100,000, we
have also been able to move forward with the development of a transitional
housing program. In fact we are currently renovating our first house, a
three-story unit in northwest Washington that will serve 4 men at a time who
are transitioning from homelessness to self-sufficiency. The house is
expected to be ready for occupation by late spring!

This year's event will be held Thursday, May 15. Bowls must be firsts, and
we ask that potters send business cards and an artist statement that will be
printed and exhibited with the piece. Tickets to the event are $200; we
already have raised $40,000 in sponsorships, and hope again this year to
meet or exceed last year's event total. Potters who donate pieces and would
like to come are warmly invited to attend as our guests.

Bowls can be mailed to us here at Miriam's Kitchen, 2401 Virginia Avenue NW,
Washington DC, 20037. We are asking that bowls arrive by May 1.

Oh I could kick my self!!

Last year Jonathan told me about this and I was so
busy that I totally missed the deadline! I sulked as I
looked at beautiful bowls and beautiful people (some
from far and wide - just like at NCECA) because I
missed it...people who were involved last year LOVED
it...

This year I think I will manage to get it together --
I have to !!

Is there still a link to look at last years event??
