Well, folks, I took some photos of some of my work. I need to select 4 =
shots for submission to some juried shows. I have sold my work at a =
local craft market in Portland, Oregon for a few years and thought I =
would like to try some shows this summer. I would appreciate any advice =
on my photos and/or work and any pointers on juried shows. Also, which =
photos should I use? The thumbnails at the bottom have numbers under =
them. Vote early and vote often! They can be seen at:

Hi Nick!

Enjoyed seeing your work! I especially likes pieces number 1, 2, 5, and 8
(by the way, numbers 9 - 13 didn't show up).

Best of luck - let us know how it goes!

Dear Nick:
Looked at your website (and indeed, as Jonathan said,
pics 9-13 are still broken links). My eye was drawn to
1, 3, 6 and 7 (that last one 'cuz that's how I feel most mornings!).

Good luck!

Hi Nick,

I second Jonathan's post: 9-13 are broken images. I liked 1,2, and 8
best. I feel like the spoons in the mug shots are unnecessary and clutter
your work. If the jury is selecting work by viewing projecting slides, I
would choose work by viewing it projected also.

Good Luck!
Jocelyn

The Wisconsin Designer Council www.wdcc.org provides a wonderful opportunity
for it's members by letting them sit in on the jurying process for their
summer outdoor fair. You sit behind the jurors and see exactly what they
see.(No booing or applauding allowed) Are other groups doing this? If not
please consider it!

I went the last couple years and found it to be a real eye-opener as far as
what makes for effective show slides. You really don't have time to evaluate
individual pieces- you see the group of slides as an single unit and
remember them that way.

I also found the issue of scale to be interesting. This is a fine craft show
and the slides were shown by media. Up on the screen, the jewelry looked
like huge sculptures and larger work often looked small. I made me rethink
my tendency to pick larger pieces for jury shots.

WDCC also requires a booth shot. Now ThAT was interesting. I think there
were probably artists who definitely made it in or were cut based on their
booth slide. Lesson- don't let the booth shot just be an after thought. It's
probably equally as important as the other shots.

Nick- I find 2,3,5,8(out of 1-8) to be an effective grouping as I think the
slip-work sort of ties them together.

Good luck,
Sylvia

As someone who has just come off of reviewing some 1100 portfolios for the
MFA at my school, one thing I would add to this topic.....Many artists do not
realize that in large juried competitions, the work is sometimes seen
(projected) for only a matter of seconds......therefore the jurors must "get
it" really quickly. Be sure to project the work, don't just hold it up to
the light to select the best exposures. Also, quality certainly
matters.....if you cannot shoot a professional quality slide, then hire
someone to do so.....it will be worth the cost! My adage is, "a good slide
will make bad work look good (or, better), a bad slide will make the best
work look bad".
