To Clayarters,

FLORIDA RELOCATION?

Where are the good places in Florida for potters to live and work? We are
recent retirees from the NY State Univ. system, presently shuttling back
and forth on the snowbird run from Buffalo to Hollywood, FL. I'm a potter
and my husband is a historian.

We are exploring permanent location somewhere in Florida and would be
grateful for any suggestions and observations-- pro or con. Here is what we
are looking for:

"Community": We are essentially urban folks who need access to town life
with human diversity, libraries, art and culture centers and a good coffee
shop. We hope to find the company of some artists, activists and people
with ideas.

"Home/Studio Site": We would like to buy a home on a site of an existing
studio or with space to build an outdoor kiln where the zoning permits. As
far as architecture goes, we would want something contemporary. Ideally it
should be on or near the water. I can dream, can't I?

Any suggestions? E-mail Gail at: marvingail@earthlink.net

My web-site has a picture of my house in Buffalo and my lustered pots:

Thanks!

ME TOO! I live in St. Louis but grew up in Florida. I am also looking for
what you have described above so well, except that I do want to be near the
ocean. I do not want to live away from the coast in Florida, and I would
prefer the west coast.

C'mon you Floridian potters -- help me come back home! ;)

I live in Safety Harbor, FL and have just put my house/studio up for sale.
Safety Harbor is a beautiful community on Tampa Bay, next to Clearwater, FL.
We have a large artist community here as well as other areas of Pinellas
county (St. Petersburg, Dunedin, Palm Harbor). There are several coffee
shops, galleries and a library within 1 and 1/2 miles of my house. I am
within 2 miles of the bay and 6 miles from the beach. The house is a
beautifully landscaped 3bedroom, 2bath with a 520 sq.ft. garage that has
been converted into an air-conditioned pottery studio. The studio is
currently equipped with 2 large electric kilns with envirovents, a large
spray booth with ventilation, large clay sink, many electrical outlets for
various other equipment, and loads of lighting. I plan to take the larger
kiln with me, but the smaller 23" x 27" kiln and spray booth are negotiable.

E-mail me if you are interested, or would like pictures and more
information.

I live in South Florida, and have visited the panhandle so I'm no expert -
by far, but my impression of this area is that it may be lacking in the
"human diversity" part. If that's not a priority, then the panhandle is a
beautiful place. The Hollywood/Ft Lauderdale area is a bastion of culture,
art, and diversity by comparison - and that's not saying much for those from
this area. Zoning issues are a problem in Broward and Dade Counties, but
there are less restrictions in some parts of palm beach county, Jupiter/Lake
Worth area and on the southwest coast - near the Ft. Myers area (probably
not Ft. Myers itself as its growing quite fast). Have you checked out
Tampa/Sarasota?

Heid - Ft. Laud.

THat is an interesting question. In Sarasota, its an ... interesting pla=
ce to live overall. as for community, there are lots of the arts in sara=
sota, as well as lots of historic mansions, museums, and some nice instit=
utional sculpture always out on the bay. the con side ... not much art a=
ctivity if your the "crafter" ceramicist. as for home and living space, =
there is lots of old spanish style homes near the water, but generally si=

studio cost is included in that price. the only thing you would have to =
pay for is your clay (which we can make there and cheap too) and your too=
