My apologies to all of you who knew Peggy Heers. I didn't know her and
now wish I would have..That was before my clayart time. Joyce told me
about her yesterday; she sounded phenomenal. My students will just have
to continue to giggle at the name "spooze". I hope Peggy is up there
laughing with us.

And, confusion regarding Lana Wilson's Magic water. I have the same
recipe for Holy Water and Magic Water. Apologies for that mistake too.

As I read Clayart this morning, I felt like I was sitting in church with
a hundred people and the preacher was talking directly to me and only to
me. (And that really happened being raised in the Bible belt.) Lily K.
is right. We need to be aware of teaching correct terminology and not
get sloppy about it.

This brings up another issue too and I know it's been on Clayart before:
Changes in recipes. When I was in grad school, David Shaner was there
for a few days with us firing a kiln. I asked him about a couple of his
recipes and he asked to see them. I showed them to him and he said,
"These are not original. I have seen dozens of variations of my Shaner
Red, Shaner Shino and my Oribe. People ask me why they don't work. I can
seldom answer them because the ingredients have changed."

We are experimenting with slips now in our salt kiln. We know which
Bauer's Orange works in our wood kiln but just last week we made up 3
test batches of Bauer's Orange for salt.all 3 slightly different, all 3
from different sources. We'll try them after NCECA.

Changing ingredients in recipes has to be done occasionally for a
variety of reasons.stability, availability of materials, firing methods,
to name a few. I like to see credit given where credit is due. If a
recipe is changed from an original, I like to see the word "altered"
behind it. And, sometimes it's hard to find the original source.

Teachers and educators are busy and have a lot on their minds but no
excuse for getting sloppy. So thank you Tony and Lily for my "wake up"
call on teaching correct terminology. It's Sunday morning and I'm going
to skip church. I've had all I can take for one morning. :)

Looking forward to seeing many of you in San Diego!
