Clayarters, as this book appears regularly named as a very important
reference I made a search and found many of them offered. They range from
$30 to $75 .As this seems to be due to the year it was printed I was
wondering if the last printing was so much better than the previous ones.
Any suggestion??

Hello, Jorge,

When a book goes through more than one "printing," that means that the same
type matrix is used again (and again). If changes are made, technically the
book should be called an "edition," usually a "new edition" (unless some
minor errata are corrected). Sometimes the word "revision" also appears.

One exception that I can point to is Mark Burleson's _The Ceramic Glaze
Handbook_, the first printing (or edition) contained so many errors that
Lark Publishers made corrections and sent out corrected copies to purchasers
of the first printing. Inside the cover of the corrected copy, you can find
the numbers 10 down through 2, indicating that this is the second printing.
Since I copies of both printings, I would have called the second one a
"corrected edition."

About the Hamer & Hamer book: Book collectors often seek out first printings
and first editions over later ones. For this reason, used and rare book
dealers often price these earlier printings at a higher price. This
situation is not always the case. If you are buying a used Hamer & Hamer,
you might want to look at the description of the book to be sure you are
getting one in good condition. Sometimes that means paying a bit more.
It's up to you.

I have a fourth edition of Hamer and Hamer's _The Potter's Dictionary..._.
The first edition was printed in 1975 and went through a second, a third,
and a "colour" edition before the fourth edition in 1997. I am not sure if
any additional editions have since appeared. Given the fact that the text
went through successive editions (not just printings), I would buy the
latest edition available since it likely reflects the latest knowledge of
ceramic chemistry and other ceramic topics.

Hope this helps.

It is just that each new edition has been updated. It is an on-going
process.

I presume you mean "The Potters' Dictionary of Materials and Techniques"
and not "Clays" which was also co-written by Frank Hamer, Jorge?

In their last letter, Frank and Janet Hamer mention that they are working
on a new edition (i.e. with additions, amendments and updates) and it
should be published later this year. Frank has recovered from his heart
attack last year, but I am sure they would not object to anyone saying that
neither of them are spring chickens any more. But they are still making and
exhibiting as well as working on the Dictionary.

Sorry, I do not know if the various foreign language versions will also be
updated or not... The publishers A & C Black, London may be able to tell
anyone interested.

I believe that all later editions of The Dictionary are pretty consistent,
but would avoid the first from the 1970s. So much has been added since
those early days, not least a great many illustrations and photographs.
Mine was sadly subject to one of those "mind if I borrow this for just a
couple of days" attacks... Never been seen since :-(

Sincerely

Janet Kaiser
