regarding soda & salt resistant coatings

Furnascote Novit is a high zirconium product excellent for such applications
as salt or soda firing environments.

FURNASCOTES are unaffected by most acids and alkalis in liquid or gaseous
form, NONVIT being particularly resistant to vanadium pentoxide. A 3mm
coating is gas tight at normal pressures.

Chemical Analysis of NONVIT:
(mainly as oxides) - %
Zirconium 62.97
Aluminium 1.63
Calcium 1.37
Magnesium 0.34
Silicon 32.06
Titanium 0.25
Boron 1.10
Fluorine 0.25 (as fluoride)

The addition of a small amount of course silicon carbide would enhance the
blackbody reemission of infrared (a perfect blackbody is 1.00, carbide is
.98) and may help to improve the consistancy of firing throughout the kiln
as well.

There was a product called HUC many years ago that contained a good deal of
carbide and I believe a significant amount of zirconia as well.

Feel free to correct me if my facts are in error.

Hello Karis:

Hmmm this sounds like something that I would try. Do you know of a supplier
in the US.
In the seventies my wife was a secretary at Burner Service and Combustion
Controls in MPLS. They are furnace builders and do rebuilds also. We would
get some of the leftovers from their jobs, partial bags, tubes, and buckets.
I'd try different coatings, castables, and plastics etc. in my salt kiln.
some were wonderful, others were, you could say, less than nice. Most were
way out of my price range at the time. A good learning situation!:0)
I realized that as potters our knowledge of what is out there for kiln
construction and upkeep is very limited.
