Standard 181 is my favorite. Throws nice and smooth, and no nasty
fireclay to chew up my fingers. 182 has fireclay if you like that. I
never have had trouble with them, but I'm only a beginner. Maybe that
means they are more forgiving. Maybe it means I don't know what I'm
talking about. You'd better decide for yourself!

Hi Holly
I have used several of Standard's clays for my cone 10 reduction firing and
find their #181 works well for throwing and handbuilding.
At cone 6, I use #112 nice toasty color and even though they rate it for cone
4-6, I fire it to cone 10 and it is very stable. I had a little trouble
attaching handles but I don't do handles that often. Mostly nonfunctional. No
trouble adding lips, eyeballs and teeth. (I make sculptural masks)
Have fun. You know they will send you 25lbs of any of the clays you want to
try...FREE. Wonderful company to deal with.
Best regards from Diane in Sunny Miami (Home of the Great Coconut Grove
Art Show)

181 is a nice smooth white stoneware, it has the look of a porcelain
that is not translucent, it is easier to handle than porcelain. and
153 is a good buff stone ware, I tend to throw quickly and thin and
both of these have throw well for me. and have good green strength.

for regular, all purpose stoneware, I like #306. It's a buff
stoneware, very plastic, great for teaching. Glazes look great on it.
=46or porcelain, #365 is very translucent and beautiful. A bit of a
challenge to throw, but worth it.=20
I personally use #551, which is a domestic porcelain. Very white,
throws like a dream, but not quite as bright and translucent as the
365. I can get another inch or two of height out of this one. This
body will go translucent if this enough, but not to the same degree as
the 365.
As for bodies to stay away from, the black/dark brown body (who's
number I don't know off hand) is notoriously problematic and prone to
extreme bloating and occasionally meltdown. Although it says it's a
cone 6 body, most people I know who use it fire it to 4 or 5, tops.

A word of caution if you are making functional pieces... Standard 182 is
rated for cone 8, not cone 6.

I have used Standard's Brooklyn Red at c.6 for years and years. It is a
wonderful body, a pleasure to work with. I mainly throw, though I do some
freeform shapes; I am new to the extruder, so I cannot opine on how it works
in one. Seems to me ok, but, truly, what do I know from extruders? Very
little.
It fires beautifully. And while it is NOT the cheapest (at Bailey's where I
buy it) it is worth every extra penny,.

Hi Holly:
I prefer standards #225 Brown stoneware clay body. That is the clay
body we use in our teaching studio in Brooklyn. It is an excellent throwing
body. We have another standard clay body here it is white stoneware #181 from
standard and we have students that have worked at Greenwich house pottery and
now work here and feel that these two clay bodies are far superior to any
clay bodies they have used at Greenwich house.

I was using the 306 at cone 6 and noticed that a number of vases seeped
from the bottoms after glazing. I wonder how vitrified it is at that
temp. It was a great clay to work with and took all my glazes nicely.

Our studio uses 5 types of standard clays -
153 for cone 10 reduction firing. We also use when teaching new
students.
112 firing cone 6 electric and reduction. Lots of students and
memebers like this on because of the speckles in it.
225 similiar to the 112 without speckles and my personal favorite.
Gets a warm color to it in electric firing that the 153 does not
get.
182 white - mushy for me but if you like a nice white.
266 - very dark and little grog. gets a little brittel in reduction
firing at cone 6
but looks great with those blues on it.
Now what many covet is it all gets mixed together to be recycled.
It's a great warm and lovely color on the finished project. Don't even miss
that color of reduction on the clay.

I use the 112 because of the Manganese specks effect.

I have never found that to matter. In fact I even use these clays for Raku
and they do as well as the Raku clays.

Thank you to everyone who replied with their favorite Cone 6 Standard
Ceramic Clays. 181 and 112 / 225 were the most frequently mentioned.
One thing that confused me was several people saying that 225 is like 112
without the manganese. The catalog for Ceramic Supply of NY NJ lists 225 as
a cone 04 - 06 in one place, mentions cone 5 in another place, and lists it
as 04 - 6 in another place! But I checked on the Standard Ceramic website
and they specifically say like 112 without the specks, cone 4-6.
Thanks again. I appreciate all the comments.

#119 and #225 for throwing, #225 for handbuilding. #119 is a lighter color=20
and takes non-opaque glazes better than #225.
