Hello Clayarters,
I'm visiting New York this week. Any suggestions as to
what I must see ceramically speaking?
Regards from the Emerald Isle.

Jim,
Welcome to NY in advance. What to see is what do
you want to look at? New, ancient, what kind of stuff?

The major museums have different collections. The
Metropolitan has a bit of everything from Oriental to
Roman to early Middle East to things found in the
various historical departments.

The Brooklyn Museum has various historical pottery.
You can check out the Museum of Art and Design,
formerly the Amer. Craft Museum.

Don't forget some galleries like Garth Clark and
Dai Ichi Arts. Google will find you most of these
rather easily. Do some web surfing before you
get here to have some ideas.

If you want to get your hands in some clay feel
free to come visit us in Brooklyn.

It opens next week, Oct 30, Ghiberti's doors, Gates of Paradise, are
a must see (though they're bronze not ceramic)

The Met also has special exhibits on Chinese Qing decorative arts and
part II of Baroque Tapestries. The Medieval ivory and boxwood
carvings are quite special too.

Not ceramics or sculpture, the New York Historical Society has some
good exhibits and is a touch of old New York:

Visit the new MoMA if you haven't yet:
Martin Puryear at MoMA, Nov 4-Jan 14
David Smith in lobby gallery -Nov 26
Alexander Calder too -Feb 18

Asia Society Museum has Arts of Kashmir
