Hi!
I thought I would share this cute story. In my college days, working on my
BFA- I had the opportunity to do a paper kiln firing. I made some pots,
burnished them- a grad student helped me get the supplies together. Making
the frame and pasting the kiln together was a blast. I ended up with a few
nice little pots.
I gave one to my grandmother. At the time she was living in an assisted
living apartment. She was an artist herself. I had told her several times,
"Grandma, don't put water in this- it is low-fired." But a couple months
later, my mother called me and said, "Laura said your pots don't work. She
said they were leaking." SO the next time when I came home from college,
and went for a visit- She had been trying to use that same pot for flowers.
It was disintegrating right in front of our eyes. I could not help but
giggle. We cleaned up the mess. Bless her heart. The look on her face was
priceless.
I understand that when you sell something, it has to go through rigorous
testing to pass as serviceable to the general public. And definitely get a
stamp made to label it otherwise on the bottom.

Whom also lives about a mile away from a dollar store that sells plates,
bowls and other ceramic knickknacks.... I will shudder when the day comes
after I open up my shop and someone claims they can get it for a dollar down
the street. I will say, "I know, go for it!" with a smile.
