heat fires pots.
heat, who cares what kind?

heat fires pots.
your location dictates the kiln you own.

bad pots fired in flame are still bad pots.
ugly pots fired in gas are still ugly.
great pots fired in electric kilns are still great pots.

nearly all kilns in kyoto, japan are fired with electricity.
thousands of great pots coming out of those kilns each day.

if we put hamada, in jail for ten years...he had clay
and an electric kiln...bet he would design great pots.

my friend bill, in denver fired for several years with an electric
kiln. black and white (thanks ron roy). now he has gas, still
fires black and white oxidized cone 6. his customers love his pots.
why change to earthy?
mel
being sensitive and negative about what kiln you
own courts disaster. the day is over when we let 10 or 12
folks decide what is `good` in clay. clayart is doing a great deal
to change attitudes.

So true, mel. Personally, I am really really happy these days with
the pots I am making. They look like me. They ARE me. Others seem
to like them.

Unfortunately, not everyone is as open minded, and I am sure someday
this will change. The perception quandary I encounters always happens
with other potters, not customers, gallery owners, or store. =20

Great pots sing in many languages.

I find this very interesting, as potter I know who have visited Japan
all sing praises about the wood fired kilns. Are these thousands of
pots of which you sing individual pieces or manufactured? Just
curious.

mel will probably reply to this himself but he was talking about in
Kyoto or in any city. The polution controls are so stringent that it's
about the only way to go. I saw pictures of a Kiyomizu area Kyoto
Potter's kiln that had such an incredible array of scrubbers and
particle collectors, you could hardly see the kiln.

On the other hand, the japanese get some incredible wood-fired effects
in electric kilns. They build fireboxes on them and get all the wood
fired and fly ash effects you could want. They use heavier resistance
wires than we normally do and they lay them right on the surface of the
wall of the kiln in a zig-zag pattern. Electric wood fire. OH YES, YOU
CAN!

"Is the Hokey Pokey really what it's all about?"

For years I lusted over gas fired work and always planed to build a gas
kiln. Then I started testing and layering glazes. In December I took =
some
of my new glazed pieces to a friend's studio tour. He of course has
wonderful gas pieces. He exclaimed and oohed and ahhed, and then I told =
him
they were ^6 electric. His response: "No Way...I thought they were =
gas."
Best compliment I ever got. Who needs a gas kiln? Not I. I am having =
way
too much fun. =20
