pittsburgh studios/workshops

Hi all -

I'm planning a visit to a friend in Pittsburgh in the
coming months (you know, March, April, May . . . I'm
open). As it's about a 9-hour drive from here, I'd
like to see if I could throw a short workshop into the
trip while I'm there.

Anyone know of potters in the Pittsburgh, PA, area,
esp. ones offering workshops? I'd be happy to just
have a list of studios to drop by, too.

Thanks everyone - Kristin

Kristin,

Not exactly Pittsburgh, but from 1 to 1 1/2 hours South of Pittsburgh is
Morgantown WV, home of West Virginia University. WVU has a ceramics degree
program and a bunch of nice folks. They offer a 6 week study abroad trip to
China every year. I could help you arrange a visit there. Follow link below.
They also do production pottery.

Then there is Zenclay a private studio/pottery. This is where I take
classes. They have eight wheels, a pugmill, slab roller, three electric
kilns and a gas fired cone 10 reduction kiln. Great people always willing to
visit and talk pots. There are two galleries, the upstairs gallery is
currently being used by WVU MFA students for their final reception/show.

The downstairs gallery will feature many different things, this month it is
flower pots. Set up for the garden clubs monthly meeting being held at "The
Tea Garden" this month.

Also upstairs is a companion business "The Tea Garden", a coffee and tea
shop where all the pots, cups, cover jars, and bowls are made at Zenclay and
are for sale.

Many good potters are in the area and many more pass through, it is hard to
say what will be going on at any given time. Below is a link to Zenclay, the
sight has not been updated and is a little hard to navigate. If you click on
the watermark you can see some pictures, also click on Gallery, the title
"The Gingko" and then on the pictures to see some of Sue's work.

I could also help arrange visit here, you could come and go right to work.
Very friendly atmosphere.

There are also some Pittsburgh contacts through Sue and some other students,
and there is talk of doing a wood fire workshop in Pittsburgh sometime in
your time frame.

Email me off list and let me know if you want to visit.
