Some of you may find this interesting, This is data is dated from 1945.
Mom's notes on the startup of her ceramics business.
Cost of kiln&tax $87.55
Kiln repair 12.00
wiring 11.72
1/2 shelf and supports 1.25
#06 cones 1.05
#19 cones .90
Kiln wash .35
1 doz #12 stilts .18
1 doz # 1 stilts .18
1 doz # 5 stilts .20
1 doz dish pins/bars .12
1 doz #05 cones .26 =20
Tax .07
Stilts .36
Total 116.19 =20

I guess the kiln was used when she got it. In January and Feb of that =
year, she brought in $75.36 and then brought in 50 to 60$ per month for =
3 more months then her book keeping stopped or has been lost. The price =
list I have from the paper work has the kiln at $168 new including =
switch box. It has 3 element sections, 3 extender sections and a top =
and bottom (8 pieces that stack together). If you have a small load, =
you can stack 2 heater sections and 1 or 2 or 3 extender sections and =
leave the others aside. it's only rated at cone 04 so I can bisque in =
it but have to baby sit it the entire time. No timer, no kiln sitter, =
you watch the cone and shut it off when it bends. (I don't use it much)
The kiln doesn't have a model number, it's a Peterson Multi-Unit Kiln =
The plant that made them and the sales office were in Compton =
California. (We lived in Bellflower at the time)

Mom mostly slipcast low fire and glazed. Did quite a bit of China =
painting too.
I still have memories of cleaning greenware and checking the cone at age =
4. Probably not the safest thing for a 4 year old to do.

Gotta go throw something... =20

Some of us still fire in kilns which have no timers and no sitters. If you
have been using them for long enough they don't require much sitting - a
couple of hours going up - through the night - then an hour or so in the
morning. It's just a matter of practise!

Jill, still in warm sunny N.Z.
