Hi Mike,
I am back from Armenia and this is the first I have read on Clayart in 3
weeks. I make large raku slabs and attached clay "nubbins" to the back.
My slabs go up to about 26 x 19". I attached four nubbins and put holes
into all four of them.(That is so I don't decorate the front upside
down). After firing I use braided wire through the holes. The other two
nubbins help the piece hang flat about an inch off the wall. I have been
doing this for about 19 years. The only time one fell off the wall was
because the nail came out and not because of my attaching job.

As for your epoxy, PC 11 or PC 7, JB Weld, are all good epoxy.

Best wishes,
Marcia Selsor

Mike, this will probably not help to allay your fears. I have had some
wood pieces that I epoxied to the back of tile pieces fall off. Others did
not. Decided that it was the epoxy and system that I was using. Have since
swithched to using PC7 and those little metal hanging rings. Have not had
any problems so far.
One technique that I picked up at a Pipenburg workshop came from Gail
Pipenburg. She does large wall pieces that are raku fired. They are quite
pricey......the hanging system can't fail. What she does is to incorporate
the hanger into the structure of the piece. This is accomplished by taking a
small piece of flex tube and form fitting a small slab over the tube, thus
forming a small tunnel between the back of the piece and the small slab.
Make sure that you slip and score before affixing the "hanger." Pull the
flex tube out after the clay sets up just a little. If you wait too long the
shrinkage will result in a stress at the joints.
The orientation of the "hangers" will be perpendicular to whatever axis
of the piece that you want to be horizontally displayed.
Hope this helps
