functional vs. non-functional

OK--I have a stupid question. I want to know the difference between =
functional and non-functional. When I apply to shows, I am often asked =
to state whether I am a Functional or Non-functional clay person. My =
feeling is that I am decorative/functional, as I do vases, candle =
lanterns, hanging leaves, leaf dishes, decorative and potentially =
functional platters, little sculptural people attached to business card =
holders, wall pockets, etc. No mugs (except for Xmas gifts! I must be =
crazy-36 slab mugs! Personalized. Omigod-undisputably functional..) no =
dinnerware, casseroles, etc. But I usually say "functional" since many =
pieces are vessals of some kind or, like the lanterns, have a purpose. =
But what then are examples of non-functional clay? And would not most =
of those pieces be more accurately described as "sculpture" and =
therefore be juried in that category, which usually exists as a separate =
slot? What about tile? With new 2003 applications arriving daily, I =
would like to at least be consistent. Any thoughts? I ask all this =
realizing that many-maybe most-of us do a mixture of things. =20

praise for the UMich MFA program. I had several fine instructors from =
that program while taking classes at the AA potters guild some 10-11 =
years ago.
