I am putting together a self guided tour brochure for 'San Diego
Historical Tile and Architectural Ceramics sites' for the upcoming
NCECA. The tour involves downtown sites easily accessible by trolley and
easy-moderate walking, and also Balboa Park sites
The brochure will be available in the NCECA packets, I believe, or at
the Tile Heritage Booth.

In doing some research I came across a lengthy but fascinating article
about part of the early ceramics scene in San Diego, specifically the
tale of California China Products company, 1911-1916 in National City,
just south of downtown San Diego.... if you want to read about trials
and tribulatins, and success though brief, this article is a good read
and there are accompanying photos. CCPco had to dig the mine, haul clay
by mule to wagons, then to a train, then build their own railroad
spur.....also interesting descriptions of kilns, process, etc.
afterwards one of founders decided life would be better in Tahiti ,
where he went on to co-write 'Mutiny on the Bounty, Pitcairn's Island,
etc...

... an interesting tale of dreams of fine porcelain , kaolin, tile,
travails, and how the opening of the Panama Canal started it all......

The article was written by Alexander Blevins and it is on the San Diego
Historical Society website at the following URL
