If the work doesn't stand on its own as a fine example of

Last year I made a wall sculpture of Medusa. It was a mask-like face with
each individual snake slithering above it. While it was still greenware, I
broke it. I picked it up by the bottom of the "mask" without supporting the
top (DUH!) A large piece broke off the bottom and some of the snakes broke.
I decided to fire it that way. Then I glaze fired it and the glaze held the
broken pieces of snakes in place. I glaze fired it onto a large circle of
clay which I had given a hammered look and bisqued. So the glaze also
attached the face to the disk. When it was finished, I was disappointed
because, even though I had decided to call it Fragment of Medusa, I did not
expect the disk to also crack - however, it did - and quite a large crack.
I decided that I could not possibly offer it for sale, but I loved it and
hung it in my studio. This year, I decided she was so beautiful she needed
to be seen, so I entered her in a show along with another piece (which won
an honorable mention) Fragment of Medusa was bought (at a very good price)
by the president of the county arts council and his wife who were ecstatic
over her. I actually mourned her loss, but was happy to know she would be
well taken care of. I saw the president a couple of weeks later and he told
me some friends had been to their house and they had shown "Medusa" off to
them. The friends said, "but....did you know she's broken?" The president
said, "I wouldn't have bought her if she hadn't been."

Can't believe I forgot to sign my post!

It's from ME - Rebecca Pierre - whose addled brain isn't good for much, but
as long as I can play in the clay I'll be OK!
