I, too, thank you, Lili for so beautifully expressing what many of us
feel but can't express.
Back in the 60s, I was in Mexico City for two weeks. While visiting
nearby ancient ruins, the guide took me to the quarters of a long-dead
priest. The room had a sleeping platform on one side. Across the room, there
was a hand-painted lion and other details on the wall. There was a magical
moment when I felt one with whomever lay upon that platform enjoying the art
on the wall. It was magical because for a few seconds time disappeared.
There was no past, no present, only forever.

Best wishes,
Catherine in Yuma, AZ
My inability to emulate occasionally results in originality.

Lili eloquently and forthrightly (as
always) said:
"That, I think, is what craft is about. There are artifacts made on the way
to the gas chambers; and artifacts made in the Japanese prisoner of war
camps, an artifacts made in the Gulag, and in the VietCong jails--and no
doubt artifacts made by the slaves on plantations, and galley slaves, and
desperate men on Devil's Island...and on and on...The makers may have died,
often horrible deaths. But the creation goes on, and it is, I think, our
greatest hope.

Thank you, Lili.

BUT when I read Lili's statement of
hope bubbling through our deepest.
darkest recesses when we view artifacts
of creation from humankind's past ...
I feel inspired to strive to be More.

Thank you, Lili. This Thanksgiving Day is
a perfect time for your evocative reminder of the significance of what =
many of us on
Clayart are attempting to do... to maybe=20
leave one artifact that will have meaning
to some distant generation .... else why
would so many of us bury pots around our
space ..... sometimes our Best Pots .....
awaiting revelation of Something to Somebody
along their own journey? I sometimes=20
receive reminders of how implosive our words
might be to another..... words we may
have forgotten expressing. How much
more lasting a handcrafted vessel ..... well,
makes me want to leave finger marks on
all my pots again .... marks that encourage
another's hands to touch where mine once were....
perhaps making a connection, elusive though
it may be .... ah, isn't
that what it's all about? Isn't that what so
many of you have
been trying to get through to me for some years now?

I don't know how or exactly when it
occurred, but this past year awareness
of wanting to achieve more than simply
make the walls remain upright has been=20
creeping into my consciousness.
At times this awareness annoys me ....
interferes with any continuum of technical
growth I'm experiencing as a craftsperson.
.. lessens my obsessive tendencies to=20
check off tasks on my Personal List of=20
glazes, forms and textures and make
them Mine.... hmmm, guess that could
be a Good Thing .......

I'm not an artist ...... I don't even WANT
to be an artist. If I live to fulfill my own
expectancies of reaching age 116 there
won't be sufficient time to become
an accomplished crafter. I know that
my own art/craft genes were so=20
mired into the Gene Pool's bottom that simply getting them unstuck from =
the murky depths is accomplishment enough.
Floating about toward a little light here&there ... Light which
allows me to Examine&Comprehend
........ AND Feel&Sense for a brief=20
moment what those who are Artists&
Craftsmen know in their bones from birth
........ is a wonderment ..... and is
enough.

BUT when I read Lili's statement of

darkest recesses when we view artifacts

In the Mojave never knowing where this
Magnificent List is going to take me
today ..... but glad that Bill from Persimmon Hill is continuing to ride
with us ...... missed you, Bill. And doesn't
it feel Righter than Right to have Craig back? We still need Tony C. to
ride shotgun, however .... maybe he's taking time to reload .....

Jaguar or cougar perhaps??? Mexico is the wrong continent for lions.
