converting pugmill to de-airing

Hi, can anyone offer advice on the feasibility of adding a vacuum pump to my
2" Ratcliffe horizontal pugmill? I plan to cut a small section from the top
of the barrel and add on a small box, through which the vacuum would work.
At the feed end of this section I would insert a 'shredder plate' in the
barrel (ca. 5mm holes small enough?) and cut away a slice of the adjacent
augur blade to just clear this each time it sweeps past. The outlet end of
the barrel would still have about 5" of feed left before the taper. How big
should I make the vacuum box and what capacity pump do I need? (I have seen
'reasonably' priced pumps with 2,4 and 6 cu. ft./minute ratings.)
Is the whole idea stupid or has anyone done it?
Any bright ideas for U.K. sources of cheap vacuum pumps welcome too!
