computerized kiln outside

Hey All,
Things are looking up for me and I think I've found a new place to
live. One problem...I'll have to put my kiln outside. How damaging will
this be to the Orton Auto-fire in humid Florida??? Of course, I'll construct
some kind of cover over it to protect it from direct rain, but will I be
risking ruining the computer in an outside environment? Any suggestions?
I'm still waiting for the AOL service to be cut off, but I did get a
yahoo email acct. ready for when that happens: cherjgauvin@yahoo.com (for
off-list contact)
If everything works out, I should be back on clayart by mid-Dec...take
that as a warning if you must!

Hi Cher,
Glad to hear things are looking up.
As for keeping your kiln computer outside, my kiln and controller are on the
back porch, walls on three sides and the roof over-hanging it - so open on
one side and the sun shines on it from dawn until noon. Dubai gets really
hot and humid from mid April to end October (40C+ or 105F+ and up to 100%
humidity) and so far, my controller has been ok. I keep a car cover over
the kiln and just for jazz, I have a silver reflector shield (the kind used
inside car windscreens) over the area of the controller. I do bring the
controller inside for the worst two months of summer because I am away and
it just seems to be a good idea. It would be too hot to fire anyway - lean
over into the kiln to load it and you drip all over the ware, inadvertant
salt firing! I don't have to worry about rain because it rarely ever does.
Best of luck,
Carol

It's winter and that means one can wear a light sweater in the early morning
and drive with the windows open until 9am. Then it's a/c and shorts.

Cheryl,

My computerized kiln is outside under a porch in hot, humid Florida and I
have had no problems. When it is not in use I throw the breaker off to
prevent any damage from lightning strikes and power surges.

Hi to All,
Cheryl, I have two L&L kilns with comp. controls in a dirt floored
workshop, here in Suisun Marsh in central California. The summers are
rather dry, but winters are cool and damp. The studio is not heated
round the clock, I have had no difficulty with either kiln. Not quite
the same as your situation, but damper than was likely intended!
