sandblasting gun

just to clear the air......itc is sprayed with a sandblasting
gun. they are cheap, under twenty bucks...(alice used to
include them with a good sized order.)

these guns can be purchased at some of the discount
big box stores....i have found them at:
northern tools. $17.50 last i paid.

they will suck up the heavy clay ladened material
in itc. splat it out and on the brick. about 40 psi.
one has to keep the material well mixed as it sinks
fast. that is the clue to spraying it...have a partner,
with a french whip....moving constantly(the itc, not the partner).
keep the itc in suspension.
it can get stuck in the hose, then you have to force it out
with a long rod or stick.

and, let it be known....you can sandblast with the gun too.
amazing.

i have sprayed kurt in butt with itc.
if he does not move, he gets it.

mel jacobson ,
an even cheaper way is to use the cheap spray gun
made by
electrolux to be used with the vacume cleaner. Just take out the
small white
plastic orifice thingy :). Worked nicely for me.

I have found that cone 10 reduction shinos, particularly red shino, and some
of the Reitz glazes were particularly good glazes for interesting results
from sandblasting.

One question, I used the sandblaster from the glass department when I was in
school, and that was a contained unit which protected you from breathing the
sand. Does a freestanding sandblaster require the use of a respirator?

YES!!! And wear goggles. And leave the area after
you are done. The dust will stay suspended for a
while, so don't hang around with your respirator
off.

You will also be happier if you wear long clothing
that buttons or zips tightly at the cuffs and neck,
and which is a tight-weave non-fuzzy fabric. (i.e.
chambray or denim, etc.) Dust sticks worse to
flannel and fleece.) A lab coat type cover-up can
help if you don't want to change clothes afterward.
Cover your hair well, and wear earplugs!

There are cheap "balaclava" type full head covers available at paint stores
or mega stores like Home Depot. Makes cleaning yourself up a lot faster and
easier.
