olympic kiln debacle

I deleted the post from the person who waited 1 year only to still have
the wrong kiln, but wish to offer condolences.

Obviously you had some backup. Most manufacturing businesses would have
closed the doors if the one piece of equipment they needed to survive was
held up for a year.

It would be different if the kiln manufacturer said it would take a year,
then you could plan on that.

Too bad we don't have a forum that goes out to thousands of potters
worldwide, and is carefully archived for ever. Then a potter looking for
a kiln would be able to search the archive, and determine from that what
kind of service to expect.

Oh wait! We do!

Seems like that kind of mistake could easily have put a small pottery
business out of business. It is not acceptable, and $500 seems like piss
poor restitution, at $6500 for 12 cubic feet, that's $541.66 a foot.
Minimal restitution for downsizing the kiln from 12 to 10 ft^3 would be
$1083. After a year I would expect the president of the company to show
up in a truck with the correct kiln, and a technician to install it....
and take you out to a damn good dinner!

Maybe I am too used to Industrial manufacturing, where that is what would
happen if a vendor held us up for a year. Maybe it's because the company
I work for has weight to throw around, and potters don't.

I don't know, but this sounds too abusive to be totally correct.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am anxiously awaiting the
response from the manufacturer, as to why this happened, and what they are
going to do about it. There must be more to this story.

Cheers!
Who is sure he will be buying at least one more new kiln in his life!

Hey Randy,

I think that if you check the archives you will find that this behaviour is
not unusual for Olympic, unfortunately. :( I have heard horror stories of
their so-called "customer service".
I hope nothing ever goes wrong with MY Oly kiln; they will find ME to be a
pain in their ass.
