staining clay with iron oxide

You might try yellow ochre (also known as Limonite or Goethite). It was
commonly used Ancestral Pueblo I potters (850 - 900 A.D.) in the American
Southwest. It does not stain like iron oxide, it adheres nicely and in
oxidation comes out deep red. I apply it as a thin wash and polish it with
a stone (but then I do not do sculptural pieces).
