Dates of the 18th annual Alabama Clay Conference are
Feb 7-8-9... first full Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
in February. Site is Spain Park High School on highway
17 (Valleydale Rd. in Birmingham, ALabama)This is a
brand-new facility and is unbelievable!!

Presenters are:

Peter King, architectural ceramics. He will find a
location on-site to create a door surround and leave
it for the school.

Rosette Gault, paperclay inventor, everything you ever
wanted to know about paperclay-should be a fantastic
workshop. Material fee:$10.

Barbara Simon, precious metal clay, how to, hands
on--unsure of the material fee rite now. Limited
enrollment.

We're working on getting Archie Pike to do a
pre-conference beginners throwing workshop on
Thursday--still working with the school on that
one--making space. Not hands-on, just demo.

Lowell Baker of the University of Alabama, Scott Myers
of Montevallo University, and somebody else, Jim
Wunch of Larkin Furnace hasn't gotten back to me yet,
building kilns in 1-2 days for personal back-yard
kinda thing. Planning session for this is next week.

Break-out sessions with Olympic Kiln on electric kiln
repair, Richard Rossiter with the "Rossiter Method",
exercises to correct repetitive motion injuries.

Door prizes include a kiln from Olympic, classes from
Appalachain Center, Penland, and Arrowmont. Elements
from Euclids, books from presenters, probably the kiln
from the precious metal clay workshop--and more to
come.

All of the above has been confirmed and I've spoken to
all the presenters within the last week.

We're talking to the Birmingham museum now about
housing Larry Manning's pottery collection and hosting
a show. We may end up having the party there as well.
I've still got to work out the bussing issue. Wendy
Jarvis owner of Bare Hands Gallery is coordinating the
gallery tour--that will probably happen on Saturday
nite, with slides and party happening on Friday nite.

I haven't done the brochure yet, but the web site is
coming along. Hope to have that up asap... as soon as
the presenters send me all the info. I'm waiting on
Georgine Clarke of the Alabama State Council on the
Arts to tell me how much the confernce will cost,
and where people should send their registrations to be
able to send that in to the magazines for publicity.
Wish she'd hurry.... Usually it's in the $65-$75
range...

So that's pretty much it right now... a few more
details to fall into place, but at least you can make
plans now. I'll post again closer to the conference
with more info and maybe the web site address (!)
You're welcome to send me your address, however, don't
reply here, it'll just get lost. Repeat the last
sentence out loud. Send to thepaynes4@yahoo.com
instead. Repeat that sentence out loud as well. ;>

Hope ya'll come!!

Tena Z. Payne
