I happen to be taking an 8 week class in Kansas City at Red Star Studio
(Stephen Hill's place), starting tomorrow, taught by David Pier. He had
the article in the September CM about rare earth glazes. The class is
about clay/glaze calculation and formulation. Should I glean any good
info from the class, I will pass it on to the list. C. A. Sanger

I just visited Laguna Clay's website where they sell the rare earth oxides,
and they list the glaze recipes used by David Pier. I was taken aback by
the very large amount of barium carb in them - 21 for the high fire glase,
22.7 for the cone 6 glaze.

If you have a chance, can you ask how safe these glazes are? Has he ever
used strontium instead? Has he had them tested?

Dear Jonathan Kirkendall,

My CM with this article has not surfed its way here yet so I am not sure =
about what this article says. But it is interesting to learn that the =
rare earth oxides are becoming available.

What are the ball park prices and which are available? Do they have the =
full range? I believe there are fifteen elements involved in this part =
of the Periodic Table.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis. Redhill, South Australia

Hello Ivor.
In the forum that Steven Goldate ( from your tiny island) had in the "about.com" was a
letter that appeared later in clayart, about rare elements. I think i had had a small
correspondence with you about it.
What I remember from that letter, was that China ( another small island) released
rare metals.
I will forward this letter to Steven to see if he know more about this subject.
