HI my name is Harry and I manage a Ceramic Studio job training
program/business enterprise for a non-profit housing corporation. The work
is with youth from disadvantage backgrounds and at the moment we are doing
tiles and murals with lots of opportunities to explore. The program is
developing and defining itself and the organization as a whole is growing. I
am looking for a studio assistant/co worker who also has an interest in
developing a broader vision of community using the arts as a means of
discovering self-potential while at the same time creating an economic model
that serves the whole. Physically the studio is well equipped and I am
seeking an associate to form a team and co create this.

Job Description
Clay Works Studio Assistant

The Venice Community Housing Corporation (VCHC) is a community-based
nonprofit housing and community development corporation that is actively
developing affordable housing and other supportive services for low-income
families in Venice and surrounding neighborhoods. VCHC builds new housing
and acquires and rehabilitates existing housing for families, seniors and
households with special housing needs.

Program Summary: Clay Works is a business venture of the Venice Community
Housing Corporation that pairs professional artists, including our own
staff, with at-risk neighborhood youth to design, fabricate and install
ceramic tile art and art murals in residential, public and commercial
buildings. Since its inception in 1997, ClayWorks has created ceramic tile
art murals and decorative ceramic tile work at twelve sites throughout Los
Angeles. The goal of ClayWorks is to train and create employment for
at-risk youth for the Venice community while making a contribution to the
organization and the community as a whole through art.

Job Description: The Studio Assistant works directly with the Studio
Manager and other ceramic artists to schedule, manage and complete ClayWorks
projects, on time and within budget. The Program Assistant is also the
ClayWorks Crew Chief, responsible for supervising and keeping other
ClayWorks employees on time and on task. The Program Assistant will lead
the crew by example and will demonstrate a high level of technical skill,
supervisory abilities and responsibility.

Duties & Responsibilities:
7 Assist Studio Manager & other ceramic artists with all aspects (design,
manufacture & installation) of operating the ClayWorks Studio and projects.
7 Act as Crew Chief-schedule, supervise and manage employees, materials and
projects in the studio and in the field.
7 Keep equipment in working order.
7 Update, track and maintain inventory of supplies & materials.
7 Perform administrative duties, including preparing plans, reports and
communication related to ClayWorks.

Qualifications & Experience Required:
7 Experience with various aspects of clay, murals & studio work including
tile manufacture, hand fabrication, kiln operations/glazing, design
abilities, mural installation
7 Basic carpentry skills, an asset
7 Willingness & ability to effectively train &manage youth employees
. Computer literate

Salary: $10-$14 per hour, doe, plus benefits

Harry, I'm not the one for the job, but am very interested in what you're
doing, and would like to keep in touch. I've been working with the AFSC
(American Friend's Service Committee) here in Santa Fe, and the
coordinator, David Lujan, has been developing such a program in Albuquerque.
Doing Tile murals is a great idea, and I'd like to suggest it to him, if you
don't mind.
