kiln opening #2

Hi all and thanks again for your patient help. My cone 5, slow speed,
30 min. hold re-fire to eliminate craters was a "bust". I now have more
craters than ever! I did observe several things: 1) most of the
problems are with Spectrum textured glazes; 2) my cones bent hardly at
all.

Perry at Skutt suggested I try a ramp and hold slow-cooling program that
builds to 2199 with a 10 min hold at one temp. and a 30 min. hold at
another. I will try this today and hope to eliminate the craters.

I will then order self supporting bisque cones 02, 03, 04 and 05, and
glaze 4, 5, 6, and 7 and do some testing to see if my kiln is firing hot
enough. In the past, I usually begin firing at night and when I awake,
the cooling cycle has begun so I have not been able to see what the top
temps reached have been.
