to get copper red, all red, there are some simple rules
to follow.

one, keep the kiln is medium reduction during the
entire firing. i set it at .06 on the oxyprobe.

just keep it there.....sorta .05-.06 all the way.

open the kiln at the end of the firing and let some
oxygen in. or better turn off the gas, leave the flu open
for a few minutes with the peeps open...maybe 10.

close it up tight....when it gets to 1900F turn one
burner on, hold the firing at 1900F for about hour hour and half.

button up the kiln....let it cool slowly.

open kiln.
bright red.

i hate to brag, but i never have half and half pots any more.
all red. if you fire to cone 11 they get purple. if you fire to cone 10
they are red, cone 9 gives a softer red.

that slow cool after a good medium reduction makes all the difference.

try it.

i like to fire mostly red when i am doing this type of firing.

shino i try to fire alone...strong early reduction and stronger
reduction during the firing.

still back fire, but, for 3 hours.

thanks hank. nils.
my red and shino teachers.

Mel,

Do you really mean .05 - .06 or is it a typo? Nils gave me instructions
(unless I misconstrued) to reduce at 5.0 - 6.0 for copper red. Obviously
there is a big difference. According to the chart he gave me, .05 is
oxidation atmosphere.

Lately my success in getting reds is not so great so would you mind
clarifying. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
